Babies become through performing who they are not. So must the rest of us. For what’s come to be normal or natural in today’s world is neither loving nor growthful. It reinforces the belief that each of us is a separate and self-contained entity. It highlights identity and generates fear of “otherness.” It makes and keeps us small. It stifles creativity and kills hope. We need to add some unnaturalness to our repertoire, to free our capacity to not merely imagine a better world but to create its becomingness. We need to create environments everywhere for people to perform beyond who they are and develop into who they are not—and thus realize the possibility and power of revolutionary activity.
